 A Rich History at James H. Law Elementary

James H. Law Elementary School, nestled on Houston’s south side, is part of the Houston Independent School District and serves students from Pre-K through 5th grade. Established to honor James H. Law, a long-time HISD athletics director and beloved coach, the school reflects his dedication to both academic excellence and student engagement.

Over the years, the school has grown into a vibrant learning community offering programs that meet diverse student needs—including Gifted & Talented, ESL, Title I support, and special education services.

The school emphasizes a well-rounded education—with dedicated instruction in core subjects like literacy, math, science, and social studies, along with fine arts, music, physical education, speech, and language arts. A full-service library media center supports students with magazines, journals, databases, and technology resources .

Milestones & Legacy

  • Named in honor of James H. Law, who served HISD for nearly 30 years as athletics director, coach, and a founding leader of district-wide educator programs.

  • Offers a range of supplemental programs aimed at meeting all learners—gifted education, ESL instruction, special education, and Title I support.

  • Part of the larger network of over 190 elementary schools in HISD, contributing to a district renowned for its scale and diversity
